A Hypnotherapy Session Taking Place.

What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?

A hypnotherapy session is a deeply relaxing and therapeutic experience that can help you make meaningful changes in your life. Many people come to hypnotherapy seeking relief from stress, anxiety, phobias, or to overcome habits they’ve struggled with for years, like smoking or overeating. But regardless of your reason for seeking therapy, the session itself is a calm, gentle process designed to help you achieve your goals.

How Does a Session Start?

The first thing I’ll do at the start of the session is ask you a series of questions. These may seem completely irrelevant at first, but they can bring out useful information. By gathering this information, I can better understand what’s going on in your life and how best to help you. This helps me understand your unique situation and decide the most effective approach for you.

Once I have all the information I need, we’ll go deeper into understanding the reason you’ve booked a session. Whether it’s stress, a phobia, or something else, I’ll gather more specific details to tailor the session to your needs. This might involve exploring the root causes of what you’re experiencing, what triggers those feelings, and how they’ve been affecting your life.

The Hypnotherapy Process

The actual hypnotherapy process itself is very relaxing. You will have already experienced a similar state of relaxation when you were waking up this morning—when you’re not quite fully asleep but not fully awake either. It’s that calm, in-between state where you feel relaxed but still aware. That’s the state we aim for in a hypnotherapy session. Once you’re in this relaxed state, your mind is much more open and receptive to positive suggestions and helpful messages.

In this relaxed state, I will use the information we’ve discussed to guide your mind toward making the changes you want to make. These positive messages are aimed at helping you achieve your goals, whether that’s letting go of stress, overcoming a fear, or changing a habit.

Am I in Control when hypnotised?

A Client in Control of their Hypnotherapy Session.
You are always in control of you hypnotherapy session.

You are always in control during a hypnotherapy session. Despite what you may have seen in hypnosis shows, where people seem to lose control or act out of character, that’s not how hypnotherapy works in a therapeutic setting. The people in those shows are willing participants, and it’s all part of the entertainment. In a hypnotherapy session, you are always in control, and I would never ask you to do anything you don’t want to. My goal is simply to help you reach the state of relaxation that allows your mind to process and internalise helpful suggestions.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

In our busy day-to-day lives, we often have so much going on that it’s hard for our minds to focus on what’s important. There’s constant background noise—thoughts, worries, distractions—that can make it difficult for our brains to absorb the messages we need to make lasting changes. Hypnotherapy works by quieting that background noise, allowing your unconscious mind to hear the messages it needs to. But please don’t think you have to concentrate hard on what I’m saying, it’s completely normal for your mind to wander during the session or for you to daydream a bit—that’s actually a good thing. Your unconscious mind is still listening and absorbing the helpful suggestions I’m giving.

Once the positive suggestions have been deeply implanted in your unconscious mind, we’ll gradually bring you back to full awareness. This process is slow and gentle, so you’ll have plenty of time to come back to the present moment feeling calm and relaxed. It’s important to know that you won’t feel groggy or disoriented when you return to full awareness. You’ll be fully alert and able to drive, as long as you were able to drive safely before the session (obviously). There’s no rush, and you will feel completely relaxed and in control the entire time.
