Hypnotherapy can help with a fear of flying.

If you want to look forward to your holiday, and not worry about your flights while you’re away, hypnotherapy can help you.

Maybe you love your holidays, but dread the flight to get you there?

Do you spend weeks before your holiday, worrying about the flight?

Once you’re on holiday you  start worrying about the flight home?

Does the length of flight dictate where you choose to holiday?

Do you have a fear of turbulence?

What causes this fear of flying?

For some people it’s the loss of control and not knowing exactly what’s going on.

Others find its the feeling of claustrophobia -my previous blog was on hypnotherapy for claustrophobia.

It may be a fear of turbulence, a bad experience on a previous flight.

Are you generally an anxious person?

What is happening when you’re anxious?

You may find you start breathing rapidly? Your hands become sweaty, you feel sick? You want to run away? Heart is racing. You feel trapped.

Why is this?

These symptoms are due to adrenalin being produced by your body. This is your body’s way of keeping safe from danger. But a flight is taking you to a lovely holiday. This coping mechanism dates back to when we were hunter-gatherers. A time when there were many natural dangers. Our body had to prepare us to run or fight in those situations.

What does Adrenalin do to the body?

When adrenalin is produced, it prepares the body for fight or flight. It sends the blood to the major muscles, so they are strong and ready. It diverts this blood from areas like the digestive system. This is why you feel sick, have a dry mouth. Less blood goes to your brain, so you can feel lightheaded. You become sweaty.

What can you do to stop this?

By simply taking control of the speed of your breathing, you can stop the adrenalin being produced. Once no more adrenalin is being produced then the circulating adrenalin can be broken down. To break down all the adrenalin in your blood stream, it takes just three minutes. This means, that if you can control your breathing for three minutes, you will be feeling normal again.

What is hypnotherapy and how can it help?

Hypnotherapy itself is a really relaxing process. During a session you will learn how to relax. This will help you learn how to control your breathing and stop the adrenalin being produced. We will practice this technique, until you feel comfortable doing it yourself when necessary.

During a session, you are always in control.

What is the hypnotised state?

The hypnotised state is a state you were in as you woke up this morning and will be in as you drift off to sleep again tonight. Its the bit between being fully conscious and being asleep.

In this lovely relaxed state, we can practice making you feel anxious, panicked. Then we will practice using what you have learnt to calm down and stop the adrenalin being produced.

Practicing while hypnotised helps to implant the technique firmly in your unconscious, so it is ready to use when you need to.

Hypnotherapy can help you change your response to flying and take back control of your life.

Does it work?

I’ve taken one client from having a full blown panic attack on a flight. One where she had to lie on the cabin floor. The pilot came out to her and she was given oxygen. To being able to take flights on her own.
